Camille Flammarion (1842–1925) was a French astronomer and influential populariser of nineteenth-century scientific thought. Trained at the Paris Observatory, he published widely on astronomy, meteorology, and cosmology, and became known for his ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to general audiences. Flammarion’s work frequently explored the intersections of empirical observation and metaphysical speculation, particularly concerning the survival of consciousness and the plurality of inhabited worlds. Originally written in French, Lumen (1872) stands as one of his most significant early attempts to merge scientific inquiry with philosophical reflection.
